The Kiambere Dam site is located approximately 2 kilometers from the Kiambere reservoir. It is part of a larger strategic development initiative by TARDA to promote sustainable land use and attract investment in the region. Historically, the land has been used for subsistence agriculture, but recent infrastructural developments, such as the tarmacking of the Gitaru-Kiambere road and the establishment of the Kiambere Airstrip, have significantly enhanced its commercial viability.
Crops: The site is suitable for the cultivation of both food and cash crops, including maize, beans, sunflower, and cotton. Fruit trees such as mangoes, avocados, and bananas are well-suited to the climatic conditions.
Livestock: The site supports both extensive and intensive livestock farming. The establishment of feedlots and dairy farms can be explored.
Agro-processing: The area has the potential for setting up agro-processing plants, such as maize milling, fruit processing, and meat processing facilities. The proximity to major markets and the presence of the airstrip enhance the feasibility of value-added agricultural enterprises.
Investors can lease portions of the land ranging from 50 acres to the entire 2000 acres, depending on their needs and investment plans. The initial lease period is set at 5-30 years, with an option for renewal based on project performance and sustainability.
Soil Type: Predominantly sandy loam, with good drainage properties, making it ideal for a variety of crops. The soil is fertile, with a pH ranging between 6.0 and 6.5, suitable for most agricultural activities.
Soil Testing: Recent soil analysis indicates adequate levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, essential for high crop yields. Investors can carry out additional tests to tailor soil management practices to specific crop requirements.
Rainfall: The area receives an average of 800-1200 mm of rainfall annually. The two main rainy seasons, from April to May and November to December, support rain-fed agriculture, while irrigation can be employed during the dry months.
Temperature: The mean annual temperature ranges from 20°C to 30°C, providing a conducive environment for crop and livestock farming throughout the year.
Reservoir Access: The site’s proximity to the Kiambere reservoir allows for the extraction of water for irrigation. There is potential for developing a comprehensive irrigation infrastructure to ensure year-round water availability.
Water Infrastructure: Plans are underway to establish water supply pipelines and storage facilities. Borehole drilling can also be explored to supplement the water needs of the site.
Road Access: The Gitaru-Kiambere tarmacked road runs adjacent to the site, providing easy access to the land. The road connects to the Embu-Mwingi highway, linking the site to Nairobi, which is approximately 150 kilometers away.
Air Access: The Kiambere Airstrip, located about 3 kilometers from the site, can accommodate light aircraft, facilitating swift transportation of high-value produce to markets.
Logistics: The site’s accessibility to major road networks ensures the seamless movement of goods and services, crucial for agribusiness activities.
Electricity Supply: The site is connected to the national grid, with electricity lines running along the Gitaru-Kiambere road. This ensures a reliable power supply for any industrial and processing activities.
Renewable Energy Potential: The area has high solar insolation, making it suitable for solar energy projects. Wind energy potential can also be explored for supplemental power generation.
